298 top-3 rankings and 20× more buyer traffic/ Case study
In six months, a German DIY eCommerce retailer went from about 15 to 298 keywords in Google’s top three, and from about 70 to 748 on page one. Estimated traffic from people ready to buy grew more than 20×, from under 1,000 to 22,431 visits a month. A content strategy revamp, link building and a PR campaign got it there, and also put the brand into AI-generated answers.
The goal was never more traffic for its own sake. It was to be the first result a German shopper sees, in Google or in an AI answer, at the moment they decide to buy.
01The challenge
The store sells paint-by-numbers kits, including personalised kits made from the customer’s own photo. Demand in Germany is huge, but the search results were crowded with marketplaces, big craft retailers and aggregator blogs.
The site had good products and almost no organic presence for the terms that sell them. Category and product pages competed with each other for the same keywords. The blog answered questions nobody was asking. And with few quality backlinks, the domain didn’t have the authority to move into the top three.
At the same time, more and more shoppers were asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews for gift ideas and “how does it work” answers. The brand appeared in none of them.
02The approach
Three workstreams ran in parallel, all mapped to buying intent rather than raw search volume.
Content strategy revamp
Rebuilt the keyword map around intent: one clear page per commercial query, consolidated cannibalising pages, and rewrote category and product copy around how Germans actually search (“eigenes Bild”, “für Erwachsene”, “Foto”).
Helpful content hub
Replaced thin blog posts with guides that answer real pre-purchase questions, like colour-mixing charts, difficulty levels and gift guides, and linked them into the products they support.
Link building & PR
An outreach and digital PR campaign earned relevant links and mentions from German-language craft, lifestyle and gifting publications, building the authority needed to compete for the head terms.
SEO / AEO optimization
Product and FAQ structured data, entity-rich copy, clean internal linking and answer-first formatting, so pages were easy for both Google and AI assistants to understand, quote and recommend.
03The results
The top three is where the clicks are, so that was the target. On 8 May 2026 the store held about 15 top-3 positions. By 6 November it held 298, with another 450 keywords in positions 4–10 and 7 in 11–20. That is 755 keywords in the top 20, up from about 100, and almost all of them on page one.
Those rankings turned into traffic from buyers. Estimated monthly visits from transactional searches went from under 1,000 in December 2025 to 22,431 in November 2026, more than 20×. Commercial-intent traffic followed the same curve to 22,304, and informational traffic reached 19,487.
04Keyword wins
Year over year, the store moved into the top positions for the most valuable paint-by-numbers searches in Germany:
| Keyword | Volume / mo | Nov 2025 | Nov 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| malen nach zahlen erwachsene | 36K | 14 | 2 |
| malen nach zahlen für erwachsene | 11K | 23 | 6 |
| malen nach zahlen eigenes bild | 9.4K | 9 | 1 |
| farben mischen tabelle | 4.7K | — | 1 |
| malen nach zahlen eigenes foto | 3.1K | 10 | 1 |
| malen nach zahlen foto | 2.2K | 11 | 1 |
“Farben mischen tabelle” (colour-mixing chart) is a good example of the content hub at work. It’s an informational query the store didn’t rank for at all. A genuinely useful guide took it straight to #1, and it now sends shoppers on to the products.
05Beyond Google: AI answers
Because the key pages were structured to answer questions clearly, and the brand was being mentioned by trusted German publications, it started appearing in AI-generated answers and recommendations for paint-by-numbers queries in Germany and neighbouring markets.
Ranking well and being cited by AI now come from the same work: clear answers, strong entities and real authority.
